FAQ About Door Frames and Mouldings
What is the difference between a door frame and a door lining?
A door lining is the internal frame that an internal door hangs on, usually a three-sided timber kit. A door frame, or casing, is a sturdier version, often rebated, used for external and fire doors. Both hold and support the door.
How wide are door frames?
For a standard UK internal door lining, the frame adds around 30mm of timber on each side of the opening, so a 762mm door needs an opening roughly 820mm wide. Lining depths also vary with the wall thickness, commonly around 100mm to 133mm. Check each product for exact sizes.
What materials do door frames and mouldings come in?
Frames, linings, architrave and skirting come in real oak veneer, white primed, hardwood and softwood, with MDF used for some mouldings. Choose a material and finish that matches your doors and the rest of the room.
Do frames and mouldings come finished or unfinished?
Both. Prefinished oak and white primed options arrive ready to fit, while unfinished linings and mouldings can be stained, oiled or painted to match your doors after fitting.
What do I need for a fire door frame?
A fire door needs a fire-rated lining or casing, usually FD30, fitted with intumescent seals and the correct stops. Using a standard lining can stop a fire door from meeting its rating, so match a fire door to a fire door frame.
How many kits do I need for a double door opening?
A single opening needs one lining or frame kit and one set of architrave. A double opening, such as for French or double doors, usually needs two kits of each, so order in pairs for wider openings.
Do you supply matching skirting and door accessories?
Yes. We stock skirting boards, timber door accessories and sliding door tracks alongside our frames and mouldings, so you can match everything and get all the parts in one place.
