Wood Species and Construction

Understanding the timber and construction method helps you choose a door that will perform well for decades.

Timber Species

Our hardwood external doors are manufactured from dense tropical hardwoods, primarily meranti and similar species such as sapele and utile. These timbers are chosen for their tight grain, natural resistance to moisture, and dimensional stability. They are significantly harder and more durable than softwoods like pine or hemlock, making them the preferred material for external doors exposed to the British weather. All timber is kiln-dried before manufacture to reduce the moisture content and prevent future warping, splitting, or movement in the frame.

Mortice and Tenon (M&T) Construction

Mortice and tenon joints are the traditional, premium method for constructing external doors. A slot (mortice) is cut into one piece of timber, and a matching projection (tenon) on the adjoining piece is inserted and glued, creating a strong, rigid joint. M&T doors resist racking (twisting out of square) and weather movement better than any other joint type. They are the standard choice for high-quality external doors and are the construction method specified in our Carolina M&T, Colonial M&T, and Barnburgh stable door ranges.

Dowelled Construction

Dowelled doors use glued wooden dowels to connect the frame components. This is a reliable and cost-effective alternative to mortise and tenon construction. While not quite as rigid as M&T under extreme weather stress, dowelled construction produces a strong, stable door at a lower price point. Our Carolina Dowelled and Derby ranges use this construction method. Dowelled doors are an excellent choice for sheltered entrances and back doors.

All our hardwood external doors are manufactured to a standard 44mm thickness, which meets the minimum requirements for external door security and weather resistance in the UK.

Finishes and Treatments

The majority of our hardwood external doors are supplied unfinished. This means the timber has been sanded smooth but has not been painted, stained, or varnished. Supplying doors unfinished gives you complete control over the final appearance and allows you to match your new door to your existing property.

Before installation, unfinished hardwood doors must be fully treated on all six faces (front, back, top, bottom, and both edges) with a suitable exterior wood finish. Options include:

• Exterior wood stain: Enhances the natural grain of the timber while providing UV protection and water resistance. Available in a wide range of wood-tone colours.
• Exterior paint: Provides a solid, opaque colour finish. Use a high-quality exterior wood paint with built-in primer for the best results.
• Wood preservative base coat: A clear or lightly tinted base treatment applied before the topcoat to protect against rot, fungal growth, and insect damage.

Whichever finish you choose, recoat your external door every two to three years to maintain protection against the weather.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hardwood External Doors

Are hardwood doors better than composite?

Hardwood doors offer natural beauty, a premium solid feel, and the ability to be refinished to change colour over time. Composite doors require less maintenance and provide consistent thermal performance. Hardwood is the better choice if you value natural materials and customisation. Composite suits buyers who prioritise low maintenance. Both meet Part L thermal requirements when correctly specified.

Do hardwood external doors need to comply with Part L?

Yes. When replacing an external door in England, it must achieve a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or lower under Part L of the Building Regulations (updated June 2022). For new builds, the requirement is 1.0 W/m²K for doors with less than 60% glazing. Installation must be carried out by a FENSA-registered installer or signed off by the local authority building control.

How long do hardwood external doors last?

A well-maintained hardwood external door can last 25 to 50 years or more. Longevity depends on the wood species, quality of construction, and how well the door is finished and maintained. Regular treatment with wood stain, paint, or preservative every two to three years protects against moisture, UV damage, and rot, extending the door's lifespan significantly.

Can I paint a hardwood external door any colour?

Yes. Our unfinished hardwood doors can be stained in any wood-tone colour or painted in any opaque colour using a high-quality exterior wood paint. The advantage of hardwood over composite is that you can change the colour at any time by sanding back and recoating. For the best finish, apply a primer followed by two to three coats of your chosen colour.

What hardware do I need for a hardwood external door?

At minimum, you will need a multipoint locking system (or a mortice lock with deadbolt), a pair of butt hinges rated for external use, a letter plate if required, and a door handle or knob. For new builds, the locking system should meet PAS 24 security standards to comply with Part Q. Hardware is sold separately from the door.

Are your hardwood doors double-glazed?

Several doors in our range are available with factory-fitted double glazing, including the 2XG, Carolina, Chigwell, and Barnburgh models. Double-glazed units improve thermal performance and help meet Part L U-value requirements. We also stock unglazed versions of many models, which allow you to have custom glass fitted by a glazier.
